Chapter Sixteen
The Wind and the Stars

It took the Hurnei four days to reach the place appointed for the muster. On the third day away in the east Li'vanh saw a tangle of low hills that someone told him were the heights of Kunoi Len Vanda; but apart from that the country was the same plain all the way. Two tribes were before them at the muster and four came after, giving them a host, Li'vanh judged, of about six thousand spears. And in the dark of the moon they rode out.
During the first day they crossed a wide river, which Silinoi told Li'vanh was the border between Khentorash and Khendhalash. 'Now we are in the country of the princes,' he said, Li'vanh could see the difference at once. The country was tame; the hand of man lay upon it, light but firm. They began to see farms with houses of wood and stone, 'rooted' houses the tribesmen called them. Once they passed a village. Li'vanh watched it with curiosity and a faint unease. This country he knew could not be familiar, yet he could not feel that it was strange. It touched a faint chord in him, as if among foreigners he had met a man who though not of his tribe was yet a plainsman. It was not recognition, but acknowledgement
From all these works of settled men the plainsmen kept themselves almost fearfully, but so large a host could not go unnoticed and many times they were hailed and asked what brought them. The blood in those parts is mixed, and none of the men who spoke to them was pure Harani, but Li'vanh was still struck by the difference between them and the Khentorei. He avoided them; they woke the same echo of memory as their country, and he disliked it. To all who accosted them Silinoi returned the same answer: that Deron, King of Rennath was being attacked by the Kelanat, and all who had help to bring should bring it to the Ford of Danamol as soon as might be. So gradually another, Harani, army grew, and followed behind them. But the Khentors did not ride with them. Outside their own lands now they clung grimly together.
